Music: The Ronettes “Be My Baby”
This is the stained glass window I designed for my balcony door. It was constructed by my mother. She taught herself the craft and became quite talented with the medium. This video shows some of the various designs I created that lead to the finished composition.
My house was built during the silent film era when Clara Bow was the most famous actress in the United States. She was the original “it” girl and was credited with making the bow shaped lip stick application popular.
Clara Bow’s career survived the transition to “talkies” and she made eleven films with sound before retiring to be a mother and rancher in Nevada.
Her iconic look and talent had always fascinated me and the design itself took more than 80 hours to perfect (having to follow the strict rules of cutting glass). I love this piece, not only because of its nostalgia and romanticism, but also because of he collaboration with my mom (who incidentally taught herself the medium in order to avoid paying what she considered an inordinate amount for a transom above a doorway in her home). In this case her thrift payed off in more ways than one.
